November 15th, 2011

I know. I am s0o0o0o0o far behind in my posts. Several months behind, in fact. I am trying to play catch up over the next week so that I can be ready for all of the holiday windows that are coming up fast. Stay tuned. It is going to be fast & furious over the next couple of weeks.

Barneys Windows, June 2011
Ella Kruglyanskaya

June 21st, 2011

Manhattan, NY
Barneys, in a few of their Madison side windows, is showcasings paintings by Ella Kruglyanskaya, a New York based artist who studied at the illustrious Cooper Union. You can view more of her paintings at her website.

Here is her artist’s statement that I pulled from MOMA/PS1:
The female figure and its accoutrements is the subject of my current paintings. I distract myself from thoughts of the ultimate betrayal of the body by engaging with the feminine image in graphic/comical ways. In “Bathers”, I enable a vulgar gaze by cropping the female torso and zeroing in on its parts. Cover-ups, in the form of colorful bathing suits, provide a much-needed relief from shameless looking. To prevent over-identification with the figures, their faces are often obscured by printed matter, and their bathing suits have a life of their own. I’m interested in pictorial events that are not narrative but visual and sometimes aspire to an unspoken punch line. The figure functions as the vessel and the space onto which the events of the painting occur.

Barneys Windows, June 2011
Isabella Blow/Daphne Guinness

June 21st, 2011

Manhattan, NY
Barneys’ windows featuring Isabella Blow’s dress collection as guarded by Daphne Guinness.
Taken directly from the window, “Isabella Blow was a fashion icon, editor, and designers’ muse whose style epitomized English eccentricity. Blow discovered and was instrumental in nurturing the careers of both Alexander McQueen and hat designer Philip Treacy. Her museum-worthy clothing collection was purchased in its entirety after her death by her close friend Daphne Guinness to ensure that it would remain intact rather then being sold at auction.”
