Have you seen these? Some sort of Target 4-day sale. Not really sure what it’s about. Seems like a bunch of cleaning supplies.

Archive of past window displays.

Sorry that these took so long to post. One thing after another kept distracting me. But here you go. Bergdorf’s “Fashion Week” windows. One is out of focus. Sorry about that. I screwed up and now the windows are down and I can’t reshoot it.

Here is a New York Times article regarding the kick-off for Fashion Week and the BG windows.

The New York Times and Bergdorf Goodman to Kick off NY Fashion Week with Special Window Displays and In-Store Exhibit of ‘Sunday Styles’ Photography by Bill Cunningham

 bergdorf goodman window displays; <br />september 05, 2008

NEW YORK, Aug 13, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) — The New York Times and Bergdorf Goodman announced today that they will kick off New York Fashion Week in September with special window displays and an in-store exhibit of Bill Cunningham’s photography from his long-running “On the Street” and “Evening Hours” columns. Both columns appear weekly in the Sunday Styles section of The Times and online at NYTimes.com. The windows will be on view from Sept. 5 – 16, along with an exhibition on the third floor at Bergdorf Goodman, which is located in New York at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street.
Mr. Cunningham is a familiar face on this very corner, where he can often be spotted snapping away at the city’s most fashionable citizens, capturing within the keen eye of his camera’s lens many of the glamorous personalities and colorful characters that populate his New York Times columns. The Bergdorf Goodman windows and exhibit will offer a unique retrospective of Mr. Cunningham’s work. The images – candid photographs of everyday New Yorkers taken on the street as they sport their fashion know-how, and of equally stylish guests at glittering evening events – have never before been collected and shown in this way.
In addition, Mr. Cunningham will be honored at a private V.I.P. event at Bergdorf Goodman co-hosted by The Times, Bergdorf Goodman and – in tribute to Mr. Cunningham’s preferred, low-emission mode of transportation around the city, his bicycle – the New York City Department of Transportation.
“New Yorkers have their own distinct take on fashion, and no one chronicles that style better than Bill Cunningham,” said Jim Gold, president and CEO, Bergdorf Goodman. “We’re delighted that our Fashion Week windows will pay tribute to Bill and the countless stylish moments his images have captured over the years.”
“There is no better way for The Times and Bergdorf Goodman to celebrate style in New York City than by honoring Bill Cunningham’s legendary work and great contributions during Fashion Week,” said Denise Warren, senior vice president, chief advertising officer, The New York Times Media Group. “Bill’s Sunday Styles columns excite and influence tastemakers around the world and exemplify how fashion is translated from the runway to the street.”
Mr. Cunningham has been a photographer for The Times since December 1978. He also narrates a slide show of “On the Street” posted each week on NYTimes.com, with additional comments and background on his photographs.

Rubik’s Revolution

I saw this on the train this morning. It an electronic version of Rubik’s Cube called Rubik’s Revolution. But rather than using brain power and strategy to solve the puzzle so that each side has their own color, you simply follow the blinking light that travels throughout the center square on each side. Basically, it’s a knockoff of Rock Star, or going much further back, Simon or Merlin.

And since I’m on the subject of Rubik’s Cube, I love this ad for the Sony PlayStation 3.

3 of the 4 northern windows have been swapped out. This chalkboard theme is also being used across the street for the mens’ windows (along with the “old photos“” theme that was used a couple of months ago for the women’s windows).

Bergdorf has been renovating inside of their store for quite some time. The southern windows have been “shuttered” up and decals have been put on them. I’m assuming that this set of windows is going to be shut down for a while as renovations continue. So, it looks like we’ll only have the northern and eastern windows to watch.

Jonas Bros on Tour

August 14th, 2008

Okay. Let me preface this by saying that I do NOT like The Jonas Brothers. They are not, and will never be, the new Hanson.

But seriously, I was walking over to B&H Photo the other night and passed by Madison Square Garden. What a crazy scene, man! The Jonas Brothers’ tour bus was parked on a side street and kids were going crazy painting on it. Obviously, this was allowed on each stop of the tour (there was a sign on the windshield that asked for the windshield not to be painted so that the driver could see out of it while driving).

I thought it was kind of a cool way of connecting with their fans.

The east windows have been switched out. Well… all except two. I’ll post those as soon as they come out. The south windows are currently being changed and those will be posted soon also.

I like these windows. Much more sculpturesque and three dimensional. And anything with a motorcycle is a-okay in my book (though, I much prefer Ducati. But Triumphs are cool.)

UPDATE: Windows 5 & 6 have been added (they were lagging behind). Also, strangely enough, window 4 was replaced.

There’s much joy about recently discovered Dr. Dragan David Dabić. Upon getting his hair cut, not only is it immediately apparent that he’s Serbian war criminal Radovan Karadzic, he’s also the long lost missing brother of Eddie Munster.

Bergdorf changed out their south and east windows last Thursday but I’m just now posting them. Sorry for the delay but it has been s0o0o0o0o incredibly humid here in the city that I couldn’t bring myself to leave the air conditioning. I finally did but man, was it miserable.

Click on thumbnail to view gallery.

The blue artwork in the east windows is a series called “Sun Prints” by Brett Day Windham. Basically, they are a type of cyanotype. Construction paper or some other sort of paper is treated with a solution of potassium ferricyanide and ferric ammonium citrate. Objects are then placed on the treated paper, exposed to UV light (such as the the sun), and then rinsed with plain water. The paper will turn blue and the object will show up as negative space.

But this series has a lot of intricate pieces and some very large proportions and so, I’m guessing that negatives were used instead of the actual products.

UPDATE: I came across a great site called bobblebee which had a posting showing this artist’s work in a set of BG windows last november.

iPhone day 8

July 18th, 2008

Okay. I’m getting bored with this. The line is still thick. I chatted with an “orange shirt” and she said that the wait was about 4 hours. Last year, people could buy an iPhone and be on their way home in less than 5 minutes. (but remember all of those at-home activation horror stories?) This year, activation is in-store and is taking a minimum of 15 minutes. It is that alone that is creating the long queues. Apple and Steve Jobs are going to need a better game plan next release.

iCan’t believe it; iPhone day 5

July 15th, 2008

It’s tuesday, day 5 of the Apple iPhone G3 launch and people are still lining up outside of the 5th Ave cube store. I shot this at 8:45am this morning. The line extended almost to the side entrance of FAO Schwartz.

A couple of tidbits from apple.com/iphone:
The website states that they are only selling the iPhone from 7:00am till 11:30pm each day. And here is a load of bull mahlarky…

“…activate your new iPhone in just a few minutes.”

BTW, the inflatable batting cage in the background was used by the CBS Morning Show in celebration of All-Star Day. It is NOT there for the iPhone line.
