NY, NY (Herald Square)
Macy’s has foregone their annual “Miracle on 34th St” windows. This year, the windows are occupied by the characters of the animated special, “Yes, Virginia”, which is a retelling of the true story of 8-year old Virginia O’Hanlon, who, in 1897, wrote a letter to the New York Sun, asking if there were really a Santa Claus. Editor Francis Church’s reply, containing the oft-quoted “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist …”, is, over 100 years later, still very much a part of popular culture.
