Calvin Klein Holiday 2011 Window Displays
Black Beacon

Saturday, December 17th, 2011

NY, NY (Madison Ave)
Can’t really see the holiday aspect, but Calvin Klein is showcasing an installation piece, “Black Beacon”, by the British artist, Nathaniel Rackowe (website here.) Consisting of a steel frame and a series of panels that open up, creating a tunnel of light, it is 60 feet long and weighs some 900 kilos.

New windows at CK. That was quick. I constantly walk by CK and find that they usually keep their window displays up for a while. If you saw my last CK post, you know of the puritanical outrage possibility quotient they harboured. So I’m wondering… did CK swap the windows out because of public pressure or did they simply just rotate them out like any of their other windows? If anyone knows, let me know. I always love a good conspiracy theory. (Ir)regardless, these windows are WAAAAAAAY tamed down. Not even a hint of Eva Mendesiness.

Whoa. These are some seriously suggestive windows over on Madison. The image of David Agbodji on window 5 is currently raising controversy over at Houston Street (it’s replaced Eva Mendes on the huge billboard overlooking the intersection at Lafayette). Window 4, though, showing the juxtaposition of the hands unseen nude window decal against the in-store mannequin on its knees with its hands tied behind his back is much more suggestive. Violent even. I gotta imagine that they’re catching some neighborhood flack for these.

CK still has the lumber windows but they’ve added this new one of Christy Turlington (Burns); again, the ever yoga evangelist. Great shot (originally the cover of the October 2002 issue of Vogue. shot by steven klein).

She’s still one of the best! Actually, THE best. The background texture is spot on.

Every once in a while, CK gets a bit creative with their windows. Perhaps these are garden hoses in tribute to the beginning of spring? Perhaps they could have been a bit more creative.

Calvin Klein is doing a housing project display. The “Madison Avenue (Doll)House” is a collaborative effort conceived by Dale Rozmiarek, senior vice president of creative services for Calvin Klein, Inc., designed by Joshua Prince-Ramus of REX Architecture PC, structurally engineered by Magnusson Klemencic Associates and fabricated by Situ Studio.

It’s a floating house. Very cool. The building backgrounds add a great gritty texture. I walk by CK every day and have been waiting for them to do something different with their windows other than just mannequins with black clothes.
